MODES OF VI EDITOR
Vi Editor is a full screen editor and has threemodes
- The Commandmode
- Insertmode (or) Textmode
- The exmode
The Command Mode
- Every character typed is a command that takes action on the textfile
- The key pressed in this mode are not displayed on thescreen
- A character typed in the command mode mayeven cause Vi Editor to enter insert mode or the exmode
- Control can be returned to command mode by pressingthe Esckey
The InsertMode (or) TextMode
- Every character typed is added to the text in thefile
- The user goes into this mode by pressing i or o ora and exits this mode by pressing the Esckey
The ExMode
- Ex mode is also known as Last-Linemode
- user can enter Ex mode from Command mode by typing the colon ( : )character
- Anything typed in front of colon ( : ) is taken to be an Excommand
- The user can return to Command mode by pressing the EnterKey
