MODES OF VI EDITOR


Vi Editor is a full screen editor and has threemodes


  • The Commandmode
  • Insertmode (or) Textmode
  • The exmode


The Command Mode


  • Every character typed is a command that takes action on the textfile
  • The key pressed in this mode are not displayed on thescreen
  • A character typed in the command mode mayeven cause Vi Editor to enter insert mode or the exmode
  • Control can be returned to command mode by pressingthe Esckey


The InsertMode (or) TextMode


  • Every character typed is added to the text in thefile
  • The user goes into this mode by pressing i or o ora and exits this mode by pressing the Esckey

The ExMode

  • Ex mode is also known as Last-Linemode
  • user can enter Ex mode from Command mode by typing the colon ( : )character
  • Anything typed in front of colon ( : ) is taken to be an Excommand
  • The user can return to Command mode by pressing the EnterKey
